Q I. (A) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below: (10 marks)
The spirit of Science is the spirit of humility, the spirit of reason, the spirit of enquiry, the spirit of cooperation, the spirit of improvement and innovation, the spirit of progress. It encourages the invention and discovery. It realizes that even the most learned know little when compared to all that is known or knowable; and all that is known to mankind is mere trifle compared to what is still unknown. The scientific spirit demands a relentless quest for truth and a shifting of truth from error, the seeming from the real, the absolute from the contingent, the whole or universal from the partial or local, the right from wrong, the good from evil. It is a search for the best for the sake of human welfare.
A man who imbibed the spirit of science has an inquisitive and receptive mind. His respect for old beliefs does not prevent him from welcoming new ideas though he does not accept things blindly. He thinks out for himself, forms his own judgment and then takes his own decision. The scientific attitude influences his whole thinking, his character as well as conduct. He becomes a keen and lifelong learner. He learns specially from science, which is the collective tested and verified wisdom of mankind, impartial to all disciplines and all religions.
Science accepts any idea as truth only after it has been considered from every angle and verified from all possible means. In fact, the findings of science are constantly under test in the form of countless gadgets, appliances and machines which are in use all over the world. Scientific methods of enquiry are now firmly established in the field of science. But few people realize that the application of these well –tried methods can revolutionize more new departments of human life, including religion and politics. All out- efforts are therefore, necessary to spread the knowledge of scientific methods among the masses.

For Indian badminton, it is one of the best occasions in recent times to raise a toast. For Saina Nehwal, personally, it has been three great weeks of consistent performance. Basically there are three aspects that go into making of a badminton star like in most other sports- technical, physical, and mental. Abundance of all three attributes is vital to be among the best in the world. She has it all. That is major difference between her and the other Indian girls. Most often, they have just two of these qualities.
Saina is exceptional; she is technical sound, physically fit, and mentally strong, which gives her an edge over others. Another great quality is her self-belief and ‘never say-die’ attitude. She does not give up easily even when the odds are against her. In a sport like badminton, her performances are all the more creditable since the game is physically so demanding.
Personally, I have a very high regard for Indian sports women who excel at the highest level since they face a lot more challenges compared to men because of the nature of our society. This is more so during the early phase of their career and the parents have to make a lot of sacrifices to travel with them for their practice sessions as well as tournaments.

The one name, generations of actors and actresses have turned, to for their best shot of their lives is Gautam Rajyadhyaksha. An artist who has devoted his life to the field of photography is also the pioneer of the ‘soft focus’ photos that have been long created an aura around the celebrities he has captured. It is no wonder then that even ion today’s slam-bang world of the digital shoots, Gautam’s photos and unique style are still in much sought after.
Gautam Rajyadhyaksha is a people’s person and for him, communication with his subjects holds the key to bringing out their character on film. His knowledge includes varied subjects from music (like Opera) to theatre art and even sports and business. Making his subjects comfortable is half the battle for him. The Jay makes answer as the Magpie chatters;
And all the air is filled with pleasant noise of waters.
All things that love the sun are out of doors;
The sky rejoices in the morning’s birth;
The grass is bright with raindrops – on the moors

But when you’d bring your picture book
And ask me please to share your fun
I’d say, “A little later, Son.”
I’d tuck you in all safe at night
And hear your prayers, turn out the lights,
Then tip toe softly to the door…
I wish I’d stayed a minute more.
